Hospital VITA Curitiba

Hospital VITA Curitiba, located in the State of Paraná, Brazil, population of 1.7 million, was a 132-bed acute-care hospital (140 licensed beds).  Curitiba, the State’s capital city, is one of Brazil’s most dynamic and fastest growing cities.  The Hospital was acquired by the VITA division of IHC in 2000 as a partial turn-around project. The hospital offered a full range of medical services and over one-third of the beds were ICU beds, making it the premier high acuity facility in the state. The hospital had approximately 650 physicians credentialed physicians with admitting privileges. The VITA management team, which was acquired by IHC as the operating platform for its Brazil operations, had been a consultant to the facility before its acquisition by IHC. While not a complete turnaround, previous owners had not been willing to implement needed actions, which were ultimately implemented by VITA, to achieve high performance.

After the acquisition by IHC through its VITA subsidiary,  Hospital VITA Curitiba became widely recognized as one of the best equipped and most modern hospitals in the State. VITA Curitiba was named as the Most Outstanding Private Hospital in all of Brazil in 2006. This historic award was the first for a hospital outside the city of Sao Paulo. The hospital received numerous awards for its services and received the first ever the Canadian Accreditation in Brazil, similar to Joint Commission International.

After acquisition by IHC and in addition to achieving the high quality and service recognitions and accreditations, the hospital increased revenue by 27% and moved from negative EBITDALM to operating margins of 23% and achieved 46,700 adjusted patient days and 8,900 annual surgeries.
